The Inside Story: Channel 4 #secretmillions

Sunday 17th March saw the first episode of Channel 4′s new feel good show ‘The Secret Millions’ beamed out across the nation. In the words of Channel 4 ‘The Secret Millions’ sees;

Channel 4 join forces with the Big Lottery Fund in the channel’s largest ever TV giveaway: £10 million has been made available to back radical ideas tackling some of Britain’s big issues. Gok Wan, Katie Piper, Jimmy Doherty, Dave Fishwick and George Clarke work with charities to develop new projects, while secretly trying to help secure £2 million of Lottery money that could turn the big idea into reality. From a radical approach to turning ex-prisoners’ lives around, to getting unemployed young people trained up and fit for work, the projects could bring new thinking to big problems and change lives.

Now the series has broken cover we can let you all in on a little secret — way back in October we took a call from Channel 4 that went something like this;

“Good Morning, Wonderstuff… Oh hello Channel 4… Whats that you say? An exciting new show in need of some graphic design work?… Hosted by Katie Piper, helping to train ex-offenders to create high-end crafted furniture?… Of course we’re interested… Yes we’d love to be filmed… Fridays great with us… Excellent, see you then.”

Our moment in the spotlight saw us working alongside Katie Piper and the Channel 4 crew, to advise on the role of graphic design within the brands early development and listen to the difficulties faced when seeking to overcome the ‘ex-offender’ label. Filming over, we were given our design brief; a piece of print that lived up to the quality of the furniture and story of its craftsmen to be delivered to camera in just a few days. Challenge accepted. A few busy days and long nights later and we’d crafted a print artefact with which everyone — Channel 4, Katie Piper, the participants and especially ourselves — was very pleased with.

We left them preparing for their big trip to London to pitch and have heard little since, so we’re eagerly awaiting the broadcast like the rest of you. Currently the date for this hasn’t been confirmed, but we do know that we and our design work has made the edit (we’re going to be famous!) and that the show will be on air within the next few weeks. Very exciting.

Hopefully we’ll be working with Channel 4 more in the future, so stay tuned for any further developments on that front. In the mean time however, keep your fingers on the remote ready to see our faces in your living room very soon.
